Neuromodulators, also known as botulinum toxin, are substances used in aesthetic medicine to treat dynamic facial wrinkles, such as forehead lines, crow's feet lines and frown lines. The most commonly used neuromodulator is botulinum toxin type A, such as Botox®.
This toxin works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause facial muscles to contract. By temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for these repetitive movements, the wrinkles and fine lines associated with these movements (frowning or squinting) become less visible or disappear completely. In addition to reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, neuromodulators can prevent the formation of new wrinkles.
Neuromodulators are widely used in aesthetic medicine to rejuvenate the appearance of the face and create a smoother, more youthful appearance. Their effects are temporary and generally last three to six months, depending on the product used and the area treated.
