Rhytidectomy, commonly known as "lower face lift", is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to reduce the visible signs of aging in the face and neck. The procedure aims to rejuvenate the appearance by tightening loose skin, reducing wrinkles and folds, and repositioning subcutaneous tissue to create a firmer, more youthful facial contour.

During a rhytidectomy, Dr. Laungani will remove excess skin and tighten subcutaneous tissue to restore facial contours and reduce wrinkles and folds. If necessary, liposuction of the neck may be performed to remove excess fat under the chin and neck, helping to reduce the double chin and refine the facial silhouette. In some cases, additional techniques may be proposed, such as facial fat injection to restore volume where the years have taken it away (for example, in the cheekbones).

  • Rhytidectomy is a relatively safe surgical procedure. However, like any surgical procedure, it carries certain risks and potential complications, including bleeding and hematoma, infection, visible scarring, skin necrosis, loss of sensitivity or facial asymmetry.

  • A rhytidectomy can help address a number of specific aesthetic concerns related to aging. These include the correction of sagging skin, the attenuation of fine lines and wrinkles, the restoration of facial contours in the cheeks and jowls, and the correction of facial assimetry. A rhytidectomy may include liposuction to remove excess fat under the chin and neck, helping to reduce the double chin and redefine the jawline. It's important to note that this is a personalized procedure and results may vary according to individual anatomical characteristics.

  • If you're concerned about sagging skin, wrinkles and folds on the face and neck, and these concerns are affecting your self-confidence or emotional well-being, you may be a good candidate for a rhytidectomy.

Rhytidectomy is generally recommended for people whose skin is beginning to show visible signs of sagging and aging, usually starting in their forties or fifties, however there is no strict age limit for surgery and older patients can also be good candidates. You must be in good general health and have no uncontrolled medical conditions that could increase the risks associated with surgery.

During a thorough consultation, Dr. Laungani will discuss with you in detail what you can expect from your surgery. While this procedure can rejuvenate your appearance and improve certain signs of aging, it cannot stop the aging process and does not guarantee a perfect or wrinkle-free appearance.

  • The recovery process after a rhytidectomy varies from person to person depending on several factors, including the extent of surgery, individual healing capacity and compliance with post-operative instructions. You can expect to experience swelling and bruising around the face and neck for the first few days, which will probably peak in the first few days after surgery. Swelling and bruising will begin to diminish in the second week after surgery, but may persist. You may also feel a tightening or pulling sensation in the skin, as well as temporary numbness. It may take several months for the final results to become fully apparent. During this time, the tissues will gradually stabilize, revealing rejuvenated facial contours.

  • There are several non-surgical alternatives to rhytidectomy that can be considered depending on your specific aesthetic concerns, treatment goals and tolerance to invasive procedures. Botulinum toxin injections (Botox®) can be used to reduce wrinkles and fine lines in the forehead, crow's feet and between the eyebrows by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for the repetitive movements that lead to wrinkle formation. Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers (Juvéderm®) can be used to fill facial wrinkles and hollows, restore lost volume and improve facial contours.

Dr. Laungani will be happy to discuss these options with you to determine the best approach to meet your specific aesthetic needs and goals. It's important to note, however, that in the presence of numerous folds and wrinkles, only surgery can give you optimal results.

Treatment results with injectables are not permanent and may require follow-up injections to maintain results.
