Platysmaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to firm and reshape the neck muscles, particularly the platysma muscle, by tightening the muscles through incisions under the chin or behind the ears.

The results of a platysmaplasty aim to provide a smoother, firmer and more youthful neck, by reducing muscle laxity and improving the contours of the neck and chin.

Platysmaplasty is often combined with other facial aesthetic procedures, such as rhytidectomy (facelift) and neck liposuction, to achieve optimal, harmonious aesthetic results.

  • Although these complications are relatively rare, platysmaplasty does carry certain risks, including bleeding and hematoma, infection, visible scarring, skin necrosis and nerve damage.

  • Platysmaplasty is designed to specifically address aesthetic concerns related to sagging of the platysma muscle and sagging of the neck. If you have visible vertical bands in your neck, also known as "neck bands", a platysmaplasty can be used to tighten and reshape these muscles. If you have excessive sagging skin in the neck, which can give the appearance of a flabby neck or "turkey neck", platysmaplasty can help tighten the skin and improve neck contours.

Slackening of the platysma muscle can also contribute to a sagging chin or double chin. By tightening the neck muscles, platysmaplasty can help redefine the jawline and improve the appearance of the chin. If you're looking to improve the definition and youthfulness of your neck, platysmaplasty may be an option for creating a firmer, more toned and more aesthetically pleasing neck.

  • If you're concerned about slackening of the platysma muscle in your neck, visible vertical neck bands, or a "turkey neck" appearance, then you may be a good candidate for platysmaplasty.

Platysmaplasty is generally recommended for people whose skin is starting to show visible signs of sagging and aging, usually starting in their fifties, however there is no strict age limit for surgery and older patients can also be good candidates. You must be in good general health and have no uncontrolled medical conditions that could increase the risks associated with surgery.

During a thorough consultation, Dr. Laungani will discuss with you in detail what you can expect from your surgery.

  • The recovery process after platysmaplasty varies from person to person depending on several factors, including the extent of surgery and individual healing capacity. You can expect some swelling and bruising of the neck and possibly the face. You may experience discomfort when eating, talking or moving your head. Swelling and bruising will begin to diminish gradually over the first few weeks after surgery, but it may take several weeks for these symptoms to disappear completely. The final results of platysmaplasty may take several months to become fully apparent, as the swelling gradually diminishes and the tissues heal.

  • Injection treatments such as botulinum toxin (Botox®) can be used to relax neck muscles, reduce the appearance of neck bands and improve chin and neck contours. These injections can help temporarily reduce the signs of aging in the neck without surgery.

Dr. Laungani will be happy to discuss these options with you to determine the best approach to meet your specific aesthetic needs and goals.
